Pure Tone Audio-Gram (PTA)

Pure Tone Audio-gram (PTA)

A pure tone audio-gram is a graph that shows the results of a pure tone audiometry test, which is a hearing test that measures the quietest sounds a person can hear:

During the test, a patient wears headphones and listens to pure tones at different Frequencies and intensities. The patient indicates when they hear each tone, usually by raising their hand or pressing a button. The test results are plotted on the audiogram as a graph of intensity versus frequency. The softest sound a patient can hear at least half the time is referred to as their pure-tone threshold (PTT).

A pure tone audiogram is the primary tool for identifying the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss. However, it only measures hearing sensitivity and doesn't provide information about how the auditory system processes real-world signals, such as speech and music.
Pure tone audiometry tests are typically conducted in a sound-absorbing booth or chamber to minimize noise reflection.

  1. Hearing Assessment: Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) helps in diagnosing the type and degree of hearing loss. It provides a clear picture of how well you can hear sounds at different pitches (frequencies) and volumes (intensities).
  2. Hearing Loss Diagnosis: It’s crucial for identifying hearing loss, whether it’s conductive (due to issues in the outer or middle ear) or sensorineural (due to issues in the inner ear or auditory nerve).
  3. Treatment Planning: Results guide audiologists and ENT specialists in recommending appropriate treatments or hearing aids.
  4. Baseline Measurement: For individuals exposed to loud environments, Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) serves as a baseline to monitor changes in hearing over time.

Pure Tone Audiometry is a fundamental tool in audiology for assessing hearing sensitivity and diagnosing hearing loss. Accurate results require proper testing conditions, equipment, and patient cooperation. The data obtained guides healthcare professionals in creating effective treatment plans or interventions.
