Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA)
Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA)
Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) is a behavioral test of hearing best suited for infants from six months to around two and a half years of age. Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) aims to identify minimum response levels at different frequencies to get information on the child's hearing.
Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) involves the child looking towards a visual target, such as a toy or an image on a screen, in response to a sound stimulus. If you’re using a toy, you should screen it from view of the child by smoked Perspex with the option to illuminate it when required to become visible.
- Assess Hearing in Young Children: Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) is used to determine the hearing thresholds of infants and toddlers who are too young to participate in traditional audiometric tests.
- Identify Hearing Loss: It helps in diagnosing hearing loss by evaluating how well a child responds to sounds at different frequencies and intensities.
- Guide Treatment: The results can inform decisions regarding further diagnostic testing, interventions, and hearing aid fitting if necessary.
- Early Detection: Early identification of hearing loss is crucial for timely intervention, which can significantly impact language development and overall communication skills.
Visual Reinforcement Audiometry is a crucial tool for assessing hearing in very young children who are unable to participate in conventional audiometric testing. It provides valuable information on hearing abilities, helping to identify hearing loss early and guide appropriate intervention. Accurate results depend on a child-friendly environment, effective use of visual reinforcements, and careful observation by the audiologist.
